994 In my opinion, the grade 994 was the finest watch produced by Hamilton. It was apparently intended more for the carriage trade than for the working railroad man. It is similar in appearance to the 12 size grade 900. The 994 was produced in very small numbers between 1913 and 1920. There were nominally 301 produced in pendant set and 899 produced in lever set. These numbers have not been fully verified by existing examples from the runs. This example with serial number 1155402 was made in 1919. The case on this watch is probably not the original case since it would likely have had a gold double hinged back and bezel case. However, the case has not held any other movement and is a good quality 25 year screw back case. It is likely that either the original case was sold during the depression, or that the original owner traded the gold case for the gold filled on when the watch was purchased to reduce the price. The gold filled case is very slightly too thin and there is an impression in the case back left by both the center jewel setting and the balance cock jewel setting.
